The Matterhorn is unmistakably Swiss. It’s one of the most famous peaks in the world and, for me, it represented the mountains long before I ever saw it in person. Growing up, I remember seeing its distinctive silhouette on chocolate bars and images of Switzerland. Somehow, that shape simply meant mountains.
Years later, when I first visited Zermatt and finally saw the Matterhorn for myself, I was struck by just how unusual it is. Its sharp, solitary shape seems almost out of place among the surrounding peaks. Strong, distinctive and instantly recognisable.
So when I chose black tea for Peak Leaves, the Matterhorn felt like the inevitable inspiration.
Black tea itself has been part of my life for much longer. Growing up, we drank plenty of loose-leaf black tea at home, always without milk and, in my case, with two sugars. After seven years living in England, my habits changed: these days, I take my black tea with milk, but no sugar.
For Matterbrew, I wanted a black tea with a character strong enough to match its mountain. Earl Grey was the natural choice. Its unmistakable bergamot aroma makes it one of those teas you recognise before you even take the first sip. Our blend is bold and intensely aromatic, just as I believe a good Earl Grey should be.
And blue cornflower petals bring flashes of colour to the dark tea leaves, a little reminder of Alpine flowers scattered across the mountain landscape.
There is something the Matterhorn and Earl Grey have in common: both are classics with a character you recognise instantly.
