The lost art of slowing down

The lost art of slowing down

Mindfulness is everywhere these days.

There are apps to remind us to breathe, courses that teach us how to be present and even Netflix series dedicated to helping us slow down. Somewhere along the way, we've turned mindfulness into something we schedule, subscribe to and learn.

But perhaps we've forgotten that slowing down wasn't always something we had to be taught.

Before our phones became our alarm clocks, assistants, entertainment and workplaces all at once, moments of stillness naturally found us. We waited. We daydreamed. We embraced silence. We allowed ourselves to be bored without immediately reaching for something to fill the space.

Today, even waiting two minutes for the kettle to boil is often enough to make us check our phones.

One of the simplest rituals we've carried with us for centuries is making a cup of tea.

Whether it's black, green, white or herbal, brewing tea gently asks us to slow down. Waiting for the water to boil. Watching the leaves slowly infuse. Wrapping our hands around a warm mug. Taking that first careful sip.

Tea has never been in a hurry.

Tea is a ritual shared across cultures, generations and centuries. Maybe that's no coincidence. The simple act of brewing a cup creates a small pause in the day, inviting us to breathe, slow down and simply enjoy the moment.

So here's a small challenge.

The next time you make yourself a cup of tea, leave your phone on the kitchen counter. Don't turn on the television. Don't answer emails. Just sit with your cup. Watch the steam rise. Feel its warmth in your hands. Take your time.

You might discover that slowing down was never something you needed to learn.

You simply needed to remember.
